Portrait of Dr. Kirk K. Hou, MD, PhD

Dr. Kirk Hou is a leading vitreoretinal surgeon who brings precision to every diagnosis and a steady hand to every procedure. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Princeton University, Dr. Hou earned his MD/PhD from Washington University. He completed ophthalmology residency and retina fellowship training at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute where he subsequently served as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. He combines rigorous evidence-based medicine with the latest imaging and surgical technology.

Dr. Hou has been recognized as a rising star in retina and specializes in diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachments, and complex vitreoretinal surgery. He is actively involved in clinical trials investigating novel therapies—giving his patients access to treatments not yet widely available. But above all, he believes the best outcomes start with patients who feel informed, prepared, and supported.

Treatment Options at RVC

Intravitreal Injections (Anti-VEGF Therapy)

The most common treatment for wet AMD, diabetic eye disease, and retinal vein occlusion. A brief, in-office injection delivers medication directly to your retina to stop vision loss and, in many cases, improve vision.

Pneumatic Retinopexy

An in-office procedure to repair select retinal detachments without an operating room. A gas bubble is injected to press the retina back into place — the least invasive detachment repair with the best visual outcomes for appropriate cases.

Retinal Laser Therapy

An in-office procedure that uses focused light to seal retinal tears, treat diabetic eye disease, and prevent further vision loss. Several laser types are available depending on your condition.

Scleral Buckle Surgery

Scleral buckle surgery is an operation to repair a retinal detachment a condition where the retina separates from the back wall of the eye.
